Box Score With less than seven seconds left in regulation Alisa Ross of Jackson State banks a shot off the glass to take the Lady Hornets and the Jackson State Tigers into overtime. Alabama State falls to Jackson State in overtime 71-64, Monday night at the Lee E. Williams ACC.
"We played good defense in spots," said head coach Freda Freeman-Jackson. "We just failed to do what we needed to do we were up by two with seven seconds left on the clock and we failed to play defense. We practice hay drill everyday so this should have been simple for us to stop Ross from scoring."
With the game knotted at 56-56 going into overtime Jackson States Ayanna Hardy-Fuller shots a free throw to place the Tigers on the board first. Fuller hits a bucket to advance the score 59-56 with 4:30 left in OT. Quentori Alford makes the first point for the Lady Hornets at the free stipe line to pull within two. The tigers went on take a six point lead with 1:14 left in overtime play. In the final minutes Jackson State went on to close out over time play with a win.
The Lady Hornets was led in scoring by Freshman Britney Wright with 15 points. Alford led on the boards with 19 and eight points. Nakiya Smith was the only other player in double digits with 10 points for Alabama State. Jamesha Blake and Kierra Paige also added nine points apiece.
"Although we had a freshman leading us tonight," said Freeman-Jackson. "We expect her to play well. We just expect more from our upper classman. The young girls have really stepped up and played, but we need some more people working the basketball and stepping up. Alford has been coming through for us she's been doing really well rebounding, but we need her to score more. We need to go back and look at what we need to fine tune ourselves so that we can get the win."
Jackson had four players in double digits with Dominique Brothern leading the Tigers with 17 points, while Fuller, Radejah Woodson and Deziree Thomas had 12 points apiece. Hardy-Fuller and Kameron Jones lead in rebounding eight rebounds apiece.
The first half saw a back and forth game with a total of 22 lead changes and 11 score ties. There were 11 lead changes in the first half. Alabama State took a 28-26 lead into half time.
Alabama State will return to the hardwood on Saturday, January 11 at 3:00 p.m. at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome.
"We will leave these two road games behind and prepare for our next two home games," said Freeman-Jackson. "We will go to the drawing board and pick up from there."
