Aaliyah Lewis and
Shelbi Vienna-Hallam teamed up for an equalizer and then reversed roles to team up yet again for what became the eventual winning goal in the 38
th minute as the Alabama State women's soccer team dug deep for a critical 2-1 SWAC victory at Jackson State on Friday afternoon.Â
Â
It was Lewis' fifth winning goal of the season and it was the first time that Alabama State had won at Jackson State in school history.Â
Lewis now holds the all-time school records for most winning goals in a season (she surpassed her own record of four winning goals from last season) and most career winning goals (nine).
Â
The win also marks the third consecutive victory—all in conference—for the Lady Hornets (6-9 overall, 3-3 SWAC) , who have been able to leapfrog the Lady Tigers (5-7-1 overall, 2-2-1 SWAC) in the conference standings.Â
Â
"I was really pleased with our fight today as we had to grind it out for the win," said Alabama State women's soccer coach
Jodie Smith.
"Aaliyah and Shelbi continue to pace us on offense."Â
Â
ASU's offense continues to produce as it has now scored multiple goals in four straight matches after it was unable to do so in the opening 11 matches of the season.Â
Â
Lewis remains red hot with nine goals and three assists in her past four matches. She now has 30 career goals.
Â
Alongside her, Vienna-Hallam continues her ascension among the SWAC's leading scorers. The junior has three goals and seven assists—all in her last five matches.
Â
ASU trailed 1-0 when Elexis Rice scored her fourth of the season unassisted in the 18
th minute to give the Lady Tigers the early advantage.Â
Lady Hornets' senior goalkeeper
Kylee Hathaway buckled down thereafter and allowed no more damage to finish with five saves.Â
Â
ASU held a 2-1 lead at halftime and the score remained unchanged in the second half.Â
Jackson State held slim advantages in shots (12-10) and shots on goal (6-5).
Â
"Defensively, we were able to—for the most part—limit their scoring chances," coach Smith said.Â
I was really pleased with how they held up late in the game as JSU pushed players forward."
Â
Next, Alabama State will travel to Baton Rouge, La. to take on SWAC opponent Southern University (5-7-1 overall, 4-0-1 SWAC) on Sunday at 1 p.m.Â
