The Lady Hornets women's volleyball team (10-15 overall, 4-0 SWAC) will be back in action as the team travels to play at non-conference opponent Jacksonville State on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
Â
The 11-day layoff has been the lengthiest time in season without playing a match for the team. ASU last played two matches in the Southern Invitational in Baton Rouge, La. on Oct. 17. The Lady Hornets came away with two sweeps to improve to 6-0 in the month of October. The team has yet to drop a set this month as well with a pristine mark of 18-0.Â
Â
The Gamecocks (15-11) pulled out a five-set win against ASU back on Sept. 16 at Lockhart Gym.   After trailing 2-0 in sets, the Lady Hornets battled to even it at two sets apiece before Jacksonville State took the final set 15-8.Â
Â
ASU had several positives to take away from the match including several individual career-best marks by its players.
Senior setter
Ellyn Jones set career highs in assists (42) and digs (17), juniorÂ
Tiara Kelley bested her high in blocks with seven and juniorÂ
Chelsey Scott put down a single-game high of 18 kills.Â
Â
The match saw 43 ties and 17 lead changes including 19 ties and seven lead changes in the first set alone.Â
Â
"I think there's a lot of parity between both teams," said ASU coach
Penny Lucas-White. "Obviously, we are looking for a different outcome. I think our players are back in sync and we've got some confidence heading in.  Playing on a different court has never fazed our girls one bit. That's one aspect that I really appreciate from my girls."
Â
In the previous meeting, senior middle blocker Nicole Merget and junior outside hitter Emily Rutherford had 14 kills apiece while freshman outside hitter Allyson Zuhlke added 13 kills to lead the Gamecocks.Â
Â
"I think they attack the line a lot," coach Lucas-White said. "I know we worked on that quite a bit after looking at some game film. We have rebounded since that time and have minimized our unforced errors so it should be a good game to watch." Â
Â
Team leaders: Â
Alabama State: Myla Marshall (182 kills, 71 blocks), Ellyn Jones (463 assists, 38 aces), Rachel Smith (172 digs); Jacksonville State: Nicole Merget (294 kills, 85 blocks), Jennifer Hart (967 assists), Charis Ludtke (24 aces), Samantha Bohne (423 digs).
