Box Score After an 11-day layoff, the Alabama State women's volleyball team was defeated on the road at Jacksonville State 3-0 (25-11, 25-21, 25-9) at the Pete Mathews Coliseum on Tuesday night in a nonconference match.
Alabama State (10-16 overall, 4-0 SWAC) couldn't get much going their way in either the first or third sets, but battled back and contended in a tight second set.
The Lady Hornets lead 13-10 at one point and hit .367 as a team in the set. After a kill by
Amber Bennett gave ASU a 15-14 advantage, JSU retaliated by winning eight of the next nine points to get some breathing room. JSU was able to complete the run with kills by Nicole Merget, Brianne Glidewell, Charis Ludtke,
The Gamecocks (16-11 overall, 7-3 Ohio Valley) were led by the 6-foot-2 Merget, who had 16 kills on a .789 hitting percentage.
The loss breaks a six-match winning streak for the Lady Hornets. Junior
Chelsey Scott led ASU with seven kills and two blocks.
Rachel Smith had six kills, six digs and a block. Bennett had five kills while
Brooke Beasley led the team with 17 assists.
Jamie Coleman had a team-high eight digs.
Alabama State will return home to host Jackson State on Friday at 7 p.m. from Lockhart Gym in a SWAC contest.
