Volleyball welcomes in UAB for rematch revival

The Alabama State women's volleyball team will take on one more nonconference opponent before finishing out the regular season with a pair of conference games and heading into the SWAC Tournament.

The Lady Hornets (12-16 overall) will welcome in UAB, members of Conference USA, who will travel from upstate to play at Lockhart Gym on Tuesday at 7 p.m.   The meeting is a rematch from last year in which ASU traveled up to Birmingham and lost a closely contested match in three sets.

Amber Bennett was among the top players for ASU as she led the team with eight kills on a .357 hitting percentage to go with three blocks.  Tiara Kelley had seven kills and Dragana Cvoric added six kills and six digs.

An area where ASU will have to improve is their defense against the Blazers, who hit .392 as a team against them in last season's meeting.

The Blazers, however, enter having lost five straight with just a 1-12 road record. When these teams met last season, UAB stood with an 18-9 record.   The Blazers are 6-23 thus far this season.

ASU women's volleyball coach Penny Lucas-White sees this game as another big test though.

"I still expect to see a high caliber UAB team," coach Lucas-White said.  "We have to take the momentum from our win against A&M and hopefully that will carry over to this game.  I'm sure we will see a well-coached team over there.  We're going need to block well and play sound defense."

ASU had taken on a different track of late, winning eight of its last past nine games including a five-set win against Alabama A&M last Thursday to clinch the Lady Hornets' second consecutive SWAC East Division crown.

"Our girls have their confidence back," coach Lucas-White said.  "Everybody else really opened us and did a great job for us last game."
