Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Volleyball beats Valley to complete undefeated season in SWAC

It was a day where the Alabama State women's volleyball team had an opportunity to honor five of its seniors and complete a second consecutive season of running a perfect record in conference play.

Seniors Brooke Beasley, Ellyn Jones, Erika Thompson, Dragana Cvoric and Shanquella Jones were honored in a special pre-game tribute with a presentation of flowers and portraits of them in action shots. A biography of each student-athlete's accomplishments at Alabama State University was read to the crowd.

On the court, the Lady Hornets imposed their will with another strong performance sweeping Mississippi Valley State 3-0 (25-13, 25-17, 25-15) at Lockhart Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.

A day after hitting a season-high .434 hitting percentage as a team against Alcorn State, the Lady Hornets (14-17 overall, 8-0 SWAC) slightly improved upon that mark by hitting .444 against Valley.

Three of the Lady Hornets' top hitters all had big games.

Junior middle hitter Myla Marshall led the team with 11 kills on a .667 hitting percentage and tacked on three digs and three blocks.  Chelsey Scott swung for nine kills on a .500 hitting percentage to go with three digs, three blocks and two aces.  And, Amber Bennett had one of the most efficient performances by an individual in the SWAC this season by hitting an .818 on nine kills.

Ellyn Jones had 19 assists and Brooke Beasley had 17 assists to help give Alabama State a plus 20 assist differential.

Alabama State has now won 16 consecutive regular season conference games and hasn't lost one since Nov. 10, 2012 against Mississippi Valley State.

The Devilettes (4-26 overall, 0-8 SWAC) were led by Halle Gayten, who had seven kills, and Cynthia Richardson, who had six kills.

Alabama State, winners of 10 of its' previous 12 games, will next enter the SWAC Tournament as the number one seed in the East Division and will begin play Saturday with a time and opponent to be determined in Baton Rouge, La.
