Women's Basketball Look To Continue Win Streak

Looking for a third straight win the Alabama State Lady Hornets basketball team will face their second MEAC opponent in two days.  The contest will take place at the Tiger Arena against a tough Savannah State University.  Tip-off is set for 5 pm.

The contest can be viewed live on ssuathletics.com for a cost of $5.95 or fans can follow the game on Savannah State's audio output and get live stats play-by-play.  As always Twitter, Facebook and Instagram will be available at bamastatesports.com (ASUbuzz).

As the Lady Hornets continue their four day road trip picking up its first road win against an MEAC school, being that the last time was during the 1986 season under the guidance of former late ASU head coach Ron Mitchell, when ASU defeated FAMU 73-67. Alabama State (2-0)also defeated the Rattlers of Florida A&M in its gym by the score of 64-49, Tuesday night.  The Lady Tigers of Savannah State (1-1) will enter tomorrows contest falling in their last match-up against the Razorbacks of Arkansas, Tuesday as well 75-46.

"It's been a long time since we've been on the road and beat a MEAC school," head coach Freda Freeman-Jackson commented.  "So that tells me a lot about this team.  We have the talent that we didn't have last year and we play collectively as a team so if we played like we did yesterday we should do well."

The series between the two teams is 5-5 and these games have all been under the helm of coach Freeman-Jackson. Last season at the Dome ASU defeated the Lady Tigers 57-52.

Alabama State will look to continue their pace as sophomore Britney Wright has been the leading scorer for ASU averaging 14.0 ppg and averaging 9.0 rebounds per contest.  Junior Jasmine Peeples is in the two spot on the team averaging 9.5 points per game and 9.0 rpg.

Savannah State is led in scoring by Kenyata Hendrix which is averaging 19.5 ppg. and teammate Etienne Kalu which is averaging 17.5 ppg.

"We know that we have our work cut out for us tomorrow and we must work together as a team," Freeman-Jackson said.  "We are a young team and I've said this before, we will just have to come out and play defense because Savannah State is a caliber team that will be very competitive."
