Football Holds Final Walk Through of 2014

The Alabama State University Hornets went through its final walk through of the season Friday afternoon at New ASU Stadium as they prepared for their upcoming Turkey Day Classic game against Stillman College.

After all of the preparation and remembering how tough last year's game was, the ASU coaching staff knows they are in for a challenge from the Tigers.

"What a great coach.  Coach Keeton and his staff have done a good job with that program," Head Coach Reggie Barlow said.  "We have so much respect for them and the student-athletes they have on their team.  They have a lot of explosive guys on offense and it'll be a huge challenge for us."

"Last year they played us really well and fought to the bitter end.  So we have to be ready to match their intensity and we are just looking forward to playing them on Saturday."

Stillman (5-5) enters the game averaging 28 points per game.  Their rushing game is in the capable hands of Jovontae Thurmon who enters the game with 717 yards averaging 7.2 yards per carry and 72 yards per game.

Josh Straughan is Stillman's quarterback and has completed 148 passes for 2,020 yards and 24 touchdowns.  Dondre Purnell is the leading receiver with 45 receptions for 558 yards.

"You can tell how they (Stillman) are playing they are a confident bunch," Barlow said.  "They are just coming off winning their Homecoming game and the quarterback (Straughan) has been there for a while and understands what they are trying to get done."

Cameron Stallings is their leader on defense.  He enters the game with 62 total tackles while Jeremy Hall has 7.5 tackles for lost yardage and three sacks.

"Defensively they are a good group of defenders," Barlow added.  "They are a bunch that plays with a lot of confidence and we know we have to have our mindset right.  Our preparation has been pretty good and we need to keep that going."

ASU's offense starts and stops with the run.  Malcolm Cyrus is the latest running back to step into that role and he is looking to become a record-setter.  While he is 206 yards away from becoming the single-season ASU rushing leader, his 1,500 yards rushing are the most rushing yards since Brad Baxter's 1,705 yards rushing back in 1986.

Cyrus is not the only solid running back on the team as Khalid Thomas has rushed for 545 yards on only 89 carries.  Quarterback Daniel Duhart has rushed for 158 yards and seven touchdowns, but it is his arm where he does most of his damage.  He has thrown for a career-high 2,105 yards and 10 touchdowns.

Earl Lucas leads a talented group of Hornet receivers as he has caught 32 passes for 347 yards.  DeMario Bell missed the last game due to an injury, but is expected to be back on the field against Stillman.  He has 28 receptions for a team-high 625 yards and four scores.

The game is also Senior Day for 18 seniors who will be playing in their final game as a Hornet.  Gates will open at 11 a.m. and the seniors will be presented at 12:15 p.m.  For ticket information call the ASU Ticket Office at 334-229-4577.  For more game-day information check out bamastatesports.com.

Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.  The game can be listened to and watched live on the internet broadcast beginning with the pregame show at 12:30 p.m. at bamastatesports.com.  The game will also be carried across 22 counties in Alabama on WKXN FM 102.7 (Montgomery), 95.7 FM (Greenville) and 96.7 FM (Pine Hill).

"This game is big for a lot of reasons," Barlow said.  "It's Homecoming for us and our fans will be coming back from different places to come and watch the game.  Our seniors, these guys have been here and you always want to send them out the right way and then of course we have not lost a game in our stadium this season.  We're looking forward to going out for all of those reasons."
