Lady Hornets Surpass Alabama A&M

Box Score Led by the efforts of freshman Brittney Wright with 19 points the Alabama State women's basketball team defeated the Lady Bulldogs of Alabama A&M 81-60 at the T.E. Elmore Gymnasium Saturday.

Wright had seven rebounds and was 6-9 from the field shooting 67 percent to help the Lady Hornets to a two game win streak to their state rivals.  Two other Alabama State players were in double figures Nakiya Smith had 15, while Quentori Alford had 10 points, six rebounds and three blocks.

"I feel like Brittney, Nakiya and Que did a good job for us tonight, really all the young ladies worked hard tonight," said head coach Freda Freeman-Jackson.  "When Que got into early foul trouble we took her out, and Alabama A&M was able to attack the middle a lot more.  Que is the anchor to our defense and I thought she did a really good job of playing defense while she was in the game."

The Lady Hornets (11-12, 4-8 SWAC) opened up a 15-3 lead midway through the opening period that Alabama A&M could not overcome.

"In the first few minutes of the game I thought we took a good defensive stance containing Alabama A&M," Freeman-Jackson stated.  "When we saw that A&M was cutting into the 12 points spread we stayed focused and played defense when we needed to, while also making baskets."

The Bulldogs scratched within 49-40 after two straight driving layups by Taylor Sippial, the closet Alabama A&M would have gotten, before the Lady Hornets went on a surge of their own advancing by as many as 22 points with 3:27 left in the first half.  Two Bulldog players went to the charity stripe and after that Alabama A&M was held scoreless until Brittney Strickland's bucket with 58 seconds left.

Tabitha Bradshaw had any early 3-pointer to make it 10-3, than Wright added a bucket and one to increase the lead to 18-3.  The Bulldogs went on a run of their own to cut the Lady Hornets lead to 11 to make the score 38-27 at halftime.

The Lady Hornets took a 16 point lead once again half way thru the second half the Bulldogs began a rally of their own, but Alabama State stayed poised despite Alabama A&M's run.  With a final 20 point lead after a 3-pt shot by Kayla Tucker with a 1:46 left, the Lady Hornets never looked back and took the victory on A&M's pink night.
