Tennis Falls to Kennesaw State

The Alabama State University tennis teams fell to Kennesaw State today at the Olean Black Underwood Tennis Complex.  The men fell 6-0 and the women fell 5-2.

The men were swept, but the match was much closer than the final score indicates.  ASU had a chance to win in doubles falling 8-6 at two and one doubles did not finish with the score at 7-6 after KSU had already won the doubles point.

Takura Mlambo and Stafan Vojnic both went into third sets in the singles action, but fell short of the singles wins.

"The men's match was like it has been this year, the intensity and effort is there we just have to find a way to finish matches," Head Coach Anuk Christiansz said.  "I can see improvement every time out and we have come a long way, but we have to take the next step and finish matches."

Like the men, the women got off to a rough start failing to pick up the doubles point, but had their chances falling 8-7 in both one and three doubles and 8-5 in two.

Singles action saw KSU jump out to a 3-0 lead after winning at one and two singles, but the final four singles matches all went three sets before the visiting Owls finished up the win.

ASU lost three and four singles in three sets, while the two wins came from Irina Cvijovic at five singles and Nathalie Lorenco at six singles.

"I can't tell you how proud I am of how the women competed," Christiansz said.  "We had chances to win against a very good Kennesaw State team and we were a point here and a point there away from winning this match.  I truly expect for the women to continue to show improvement each and every time out on the court.  I am pleased with how far they have come and can see the excitement in their play because they know they are getting better."

Today's matches brought to end the six-match home stand for the Alabama State.  The teams will next be on the court Feb. 22 in New Orleans when they face Xavier University (La.) at 3 p.m.
