"This was a much needed win, I thought our girls really fought hard," head coach
Freda Freeman-Jackson said "We knew coming in to the game that this was going to be an even tempered team and we had to match their aggression. I felt that we wasn't matching their aggression at first but midway thru the half we changed our game plan."
ASU shot 52 percent from the field and 59 percent from the free throw line.
Alcorn (7-18, 6-8) was led by Angelic Wilson-Reid who had 17 points and 14 rebounds.
Wright had a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds.
Nakiya Smith scored 14 points, and
Daniele Ewert had a season and career high of 13 with Peeples adding 10.
"We had 21 assist and anytime you have four or five girls with double figures that shows that you are really distributing the ball well," Freeman-Jackson said. "If we can continue to pass the ball well and play good defense we feel that we can really be in contention for the postseason."
Alabama State will host Southern on Monday, February 24, at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome. Tipoff is slated for 5:30 p.m.
