Box Score The Alabama State Women's basketball team defeated Southern University 73-63 Monday night at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome.
In the first half Alabama State (13-12, 6-8) came out slow as Southern started the game on a 15–4 run for the first six minutes of the game. The Lady Hornets didn't score their first basket until the 15:26 mark, when Danielle Ewert went two for two at the line and started chipping away at the Lady Jaguar lead. The Hornets got their first lead at the 1:40 mark when
Brittney Wright scored to make the game 29-27.
"This was a much needed win, we started off slow but made an adjustment on defense that worked," head coach
Freda Freeman-Jackson said "We came in to this game with our back against the walls but we pulled it out in the end . We really just needed to spread the floors so we could create the opportunities that we needed for our girls to score."
ASU shot 45 percent from the field and 48 percent from the free throw line.
Southern (16-7, 13-2) was led by Kendra Coleman who had 17 points along with Jasmine Jefferson and Adrian Sanders who both put up 14 points a piece.
Nakiya Smith who shot 12 of 21 scored 25 points which led all scorers while
Brittney Wright added 15 of her own.
Alabama State will hit the road to face Texas Southern on Saturday, March 1. Tipoff is slated for 2 p.m.
