Lady Hornets Fall To Georgia Southern

The Alabama State women's tennis team lost at home 7-0 to Georgia Southern Saturday at the Olean Black Underwood Tennis Center.

Alabama State (2-4) played a highly competitive overall match overall, but could not take a set from Georgia Southern (3-0), which has posted all three wins by a 7-0 score.

"We had chances to win the point in doubles," head coach Anuk Christiansz said. "In singles play, we just need a little bit more match toughness against a team that is slightly above our level."

A trio of Lady Hornets improved in the second set from set one in defeat. The top three singles of Arantxia Wijngaarde, Pauline Denis, and Melissa Telfer dropped the final set

It was a good week overall for the Lady Hornets, who won two of three matches this week.

"For the most part I'm pretty happy with the way they are progressing," Christiansz said. "We are staying in the matches, and playing very competitively. We're still a young program, but I'm very optimistic. We just have to keep building and keep getting better."

Both the Alabama State women's and men's teams will continue its homestands next weekend. Both ASU teams will host Jacksonville State Friday at 10 a.m. and Florida A&M  Saturday Feb. 15 at 10 a.m., and the men will host  Kennesaw State Sunday at 2 p.m.  at the Olean Black Underwood Tennis Center.
