The Alabama State University women's basketball team overcame a nine point deficit in the final four minutes of the game to take the game over Grambling and picking up their seventh consecutive win 78-77 outscoring GSU 10-4 down the final stretch.
"Our ladies never gave up tonight" said head coach
Freda Freeman-Jackson. "Grambling played tough and didn't quit but, I am glad that our ladies fought hard tonight and pulled out the win.
Down 77-68 at the 3:31 mark of the second half the Lady Hornets sparked back into the game with an amazing ten point run to close out the game beginning with a
Daniele Ewert jumper at the 3:13 mark to bring them within seven 77-70. After a
Jasmine Peeples jumper and two big buckets by
Brittney Wright the Lady Hornets cut the Tiger lead to two 77-75 with 1:33 left in the game. In the final minute of play Ewert came up big again for the Lady Hornets sinking in another jumper and a clutch free throw to help ASU take the 78-77 lead with 1:06 remaining which would be the deciding factor in the game as the Tigers would not score for the remainder of the game.
The second half got out to a short span of scoreless action, but shortly the Lady Hornets would heat up going on a scoring spree of seven unanswered points to take a 40-36 lead at the start. GSU would not give up as they would take the lead right back at the 16:08 mark 44-42 behind a pair of free throws. For the next ten minutes in a back and forth battle between both teams the Lady Tigers would open up and take a big 71-63 lead with under six minutes left in the contest.
The Lady Hornets had four players in double figures led by
Nakiya Smith's 21 point performance; her sixth game of scoring 20 points or more.
Jamesha Blake and
Jasmine Peeples had 16 points each to contribute to ASU's win and
Brittney Wright added 12 points.
In an aggressive first half the Lady Hornets got out to an early 15-8 lead in the first six minutes of play. The Lady Tigers began cutting into ASU's lead and at the 7:43 mark took the lead 20-19. After trading a few baskets, GSU would then outscore the Lady Hornets 16-14 and head into the half with a slim three point lead 36-33. N. Smith led all scorers for the half with 12 points heading into the locker rooms.
"Nakiya played big for us scoring 21 points, along with Jamesha who came up big for us tonight on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball." said Freeman-Jackson
For Grambling Dennisha Chambers and Joanna Miller were their top scorers finishing the game each with 17 points.
With the victory the Lady Hornets clinched the fifth seed in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) tournament which is slated to begin next week March 11-15 in Houston, TX.
Alabama State will wrap up its regular season at home against Jackson State for senior night and connection day on Saturday, March 8
th tip-off is slated for 3:00 p.m.
