NEW ORLEANS—Alabama State's Lady Hornets tennis team fell to Southern 4-0 in the semifinals of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Women's Tennis Championship.
The loss ends the Lady Hornets season with an 11-14 overall final record which is the best record in recent memory for the Lady Hornets. It was just 2012 when the Lady Hornets managed only one win for the entire season.
ASU was playing from behind in singles action after dropping the doubles point and even though the Lady Hornets hung in there for a while the second seeded Lady Jags (9-8) were able to pull out singles wins at two, four and six to end the match with the 4-0 final scoring margin.
"I'm disappointed and I know the ladies are upset with the loss, but with what they have done this year I am really proud of them," Head Coach
Anuk Christiansz said. "I could not be more proud of how hard they have worked this season and how competitive they have played. This is a season I have enjoyed being a part of to see the growth of these ladies."
The Lady Hornets fell in doubles as Southern was able to win at both two and three doubles to head into singles play with the 1-0 lead. The two teams were even at five at one doubles when action was stopped.
"We know we are a couple of players away from really making a mark in this conference and we need to get out and find those players, but when I sit back and look at how far we have come over the past two years I can't help but be excited," Christiansz said. "We are going to get there and this team really has set the foundation for where we are going to go with this program."
