Soccer drops tough match at Troy

Troy, Ala.- The Alabama State soccer team fell 6-0 to the Troy Trojans at the Troy Soccer Complex.

The first half was uneventful until the 24th minute when the Trojans scored the first goal from Chelsey William, before picking up an assist off a goal from Alissa Jones in the 25th minute.

Payton Donley nailed a goal from 23 yards out off an assist from Jane Latif.

"We played poorly in every facet of the game, no organization at all and our defense was absent," coach Jodie Smith said.

The Trojans came out of the half with a goal from Jones off an assist from Annabell Simpson in the 47th minute.

Williams scored again in the 63rd minute off of a direct corner kick, while Latif finished off the evening with a goal off an assist from Jones in the 67th minute.

Senior goalkeeper Kylee Hathaway had 16 saves with freshman Zaria Maynard seeing action and picking up four of her own.

"Now we are going to watch film, do a lot of fitness work and regroup for USC-Upstate," Smith said.

Alabama State will return to action Friday at 7 p.m. as they host USC-Upstate in their home opener before going back on the road to face UNC Asheville at 3 p.m. on Sept. 5 and Presbyterian on Sept. 7 at noon.

Admission to all home matches is free.
