The Alabama State women's soccer team ran up against a three-goal deficit and lightning that carried on long enough to stop their match short at Georgia Southern in a 3-0 nonconference defeat on Friday afternoon in Statesboro.Â
Â
The Lady Hornets (3-4 overall, 2-4 road) trailed 2-0 at halftime when the Eagles' Melinda Lukas and Stephanie Gratto were able to score in the 16
th and 20
th minute.Â
Â
The first shot was mishandled by Hornets' goalkeeper
Kylee Hathaway on a cross.Â
Gratto's goal came off an assist from Cori Dulmage when the ball was partially deflected, but scurried over to hit the crossbar and into the goal.Â
Â
Hathaway played the entire first half and made 11 saves. Â
Â
Georgia Southern (5-1) kept pressure on the ASU defense throughout by holding a 27-2 shots advantage.
Jennifer Wittick tallied her third goal of the season in the 51
st minute on a lob over the keeper's head.Â
Â
Freshman goalkeeper
Zaria Maynard entered in the second half and saw action for the second time this season.Â
The Raleigh, N.C. native collected two saves in 25:18 of action before lightning stopped play in the 71
st minute.Â
Â
Alabama State will return home to take on Jacksonville State on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the ASU Soccer Complex.
