ASU regroups for thrilling five-set victory vs. The Citadel

Box Score
The Alabama State women's volleyball team rallied from being behind two sets to one to win a thrilling five-setter against The Citadel (25-19, 20-25, 17-25, 25-21, 15-11) in an afternoon match on Day 2 of the ISTAP Collegiate Cup 2 volleyball tournament Friday at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome.

Junior right side Tiara Kelley came up huge down the stretch for the Lady Hornets, smashing two shots when the match was highly in question.  Kelley, a native of Amarillo, Texas, made it 11-9 to force a Bulldogs' timeout.

With Jamie Coleman serving, ASU capitalized on a pair of Bulldogs' errors to make it 13-9.  After The Citadel earned two points on kills by Bailey Kernodle and Samantha Espy, the Lady Hornets closed it out with a strong kill from Rachel Smith and Myla Marshall.

Junior outside hitter Amber Bennett was on point as well for ASU as her team-high 15 kills and three blocks helped fortify the Lady Hornets' front line.

Smith put forth an all-around solid game by contributing with 19 digs, 11 kills, four service aces and three blocks.

The match had a back-and-forth throughout the match.  In the third set, ASU recaptured a 10-9 lead when Brooke Beasley got into a nice rhythm from the service line.

But, the Citadel took the lead back at 13-12 on an ASU attack error.  After the ninth tie of the set was reached at 14 apiece, the Bulldogs closed strong by winning the set 25-17.

The teams traded points once again for much of the fourth set with the score locked up at 14 all.  ASU took an 18-16 lead on a Tiara Kelley kill to force a Bulldogs' timeout.

The Lady Hornets eventually went on to win the fourth set 25-21 to force a fifth-and final-set.

ASU (4-7) will play Alabama at 8:30 a.m. and Southern Mississippi at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday.
