Lady Hornets road bound for three matches in Florida


After a seven-match home stand and a traveling distance of 589 miles from Montgomery, Alabama, to Fort Myers, Florida, the Alabama State women's volleyball team will look to take the court against two universities from Florida and another from Missouri this weekend in the Florida Gulf Coast University Hilton Garden Inn/Homewood Suites Classic.

First up, the Lady Hornets (4-10) will be seeking to play the part of spoilers against Florida Gulf Coast University Friday at 6:00 p.m. (CT).  It will be the home opener for the Eagles (4-5) at Alico Arena. 

On Saturday, ASU will play a twin bill with an early match against Florida Atlantic University (8-3) at 8:30 a.m. and an afternoon meeting with Missouri-Kansas City (8-3) at 2:45 p.m.

The Lady Hornets are likely to be in for another dose of quality competition from the teams that it is going up against in Florida. 

All of ASU's opponents in the tournament are coming off a victory. 

Florida Gulf Coast beat Texas Southern in straight sets last Saturday and has won two of its last three matches. 

Florida Atlantic topped Florida International University 3-1 on Wednesday and has won three straight and six of its last seven matches. 

And, Missouri-Kansas City defeated Southeast Missouri State 3-1 this past Tuesday to pick up its' fourth consecutive victory. 

Players to watch: FGCU senior middle blocker Olivia Mesner (102 kills on a .322 hitting percentage, 21 blocks), FGCU redshirt senior outside hitter Jessica Barnes (112 kills), FAU junior middle blocker Brittney Brown (114 kills on .323 hitting percentage, 22 blocks), FAU junior outside hitter Kristina Rankovic (108 kills, 72 digs, 16 aces), ASU junior outside hitter Chelsey Scott (102 kills, 15 blocks), ASU senior setter Ellyn Jones (281 assists, 88 digs, 16 aces), MKC junior outside hitter Jessica Hendin (145 digs, 138 kills, 20 blocks, 19 aces), MKC junior middle hitter Emma Hagedorn (98 kills on a .278 hitting percentage, 55 blocks).
