Texas Southern came out with much more intensity in the second half than it showed in the opening half as it received goals after halftime from Marlyn Campa and Rebecca Hajny to slip past Alabama State 2-1 in a SWAC women's soccer match on Sunday afternoon at Durley Field in Houston, Texas.Â
Â
The Lady Hornets (3-8 overall, 0-2 SWAC) controlled play throughout most of the first half.Â
Looking rejuvenated and playing more aggressive than it did in Friday's match at Prairie View A&M, ASU outshot TSU 14-10 for the match.Â
It was a turnaround after being outshot 19-8 in their previous match.Â
Â
The decision by Alabama State women's soccer coach
Jodie Smith to move junior
Shelbi Vienna-Hallam in the starting lineup from her usual defender spot to the forward position paid dividends from the onset as the soccer player from down under (Tazmania, Australia) provided a huge spark into the Lady Hornets' offense.Â
Â
Vienna-Hallam was moving and grooving around the field as she kept pressure on the Texas Southern back line of defense all afternoon.Â
The transfer from Peninsula Junior College scored her first career goal with ASU from about 25 yards out on a chip shot that went over Texas Southern goalkeeper Liliana Hernandez's head in the 24
th minute.Â
Â
Sophomore
Aaliyah Lewis assisted on the play for her third of the season and moved into a three-way tie for second place all-time in Alabama State women's soccer history for assists with 10.Â
Lewis is now tied with
Alexandria Cannon (2012-present) and Lenna Lamas (2010-12).Â
Only
Anastasia McCleary (2012-13) remains ahead of Lewis with 13 assists.Â
Â
ASU held that 1-0 advantage until the 68
th minute when Campa scored off an assist from Erica Cozart.Â
Â
The Lady Tigers (1-6-2 overall, 1-0-1 SWAC) began to turn up the tempo from there and was able to score on a set piece in the 82
nd minute.Â
Stephanie Hernandez found Hajny with a shot that lofted over an ASU defensive wall for the winning margin.Â
Kylee Hathaway made six saves for ASU.Â
Â
Along with Vienna-Hallam, Lewis,
Korinda Campbell and
Kayla Edwards provided 12 of the Lady Hornets' 14 shot attempts.Â
Â
Malinda Smith played sound defense for ASU by using her body well to shield off Tiger scoring threats inside of 20 yards of the ASU goal.Â
Â
Next, Alabama State will meet Howard University on Sunday at 1 p.m. in a SWAC contest.
The match will be considered a "home" contest for Howard, but it will be played in Birmingham, Ala.Â
