Hornets Come From 19 Down to Win at UAPB

7500
Brown scored a game-high
20 points in the win
Bobby Brown scored 20 points including a key three pointer with 10 seconds left to lead Alabama State to a 74-71 road win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

ASU (7-5/3-0 SWAC) trailed by 19 in the first half only to fight their way back for the win.  Brown scored 14 of his game-high points in the second half as the Hornets shot a solid 54 percent in the final 20 minutes of action.

"We talked about we don't have any 19 point plays so we just have to play one possession at a time," Head Coach Lewis Jackson said.  "We needed to see the ball go through the net and then we needed to calm down and see through the defense they were playing. They were trapping everywhere and we were timid with our passes and unsure of whom we wanted to pass the ball to and as a result we found ourselves in a hole."

"Fortunately the guys kept chipping away and chipping away and we managed to go in at halftime in single digits and we knew it was going to be a ball game."

ASU's first lead of the game came at 43-41 after two Brown free throws with 13:49 left in the game.  The Hornets went on to lead by as many as eight points during the game, but UAPB stayed in the game by making three point field goals.  They made 10 in all, and hit five consecutive threes in the second half to actually take a 69-68 lead when Brown hit his three with 10 seconds left to put ASU back up 71-69.  They would never trail again.

Wendell Lewis scored a career-high 16 points in the win and Maurice Strong added 15.  Brown led the Hornets rebounding efforts with a game-high eight while Strong, the SWAC's leader in rebounds, finished with seven.  ASU out rebounded UAPB 39-22 with 15 of those coming on the offensive end which led to 15 second chance points.

"Bobby was big for us tonight," Jackson said.  "He got offensive rebounds for us, he got his hands on tips and he made some big shots for us.  Each night it can be a different guy with this ball club."

UAPB (3-13/0-2 SWAC) shot 48 percent from the field, but the big numbers were the Golden Lions ability to hit three point field goals.  They hit 10 of their 28 attempts

The SWAC's leading scorer, Marcel Mosley, led up to his hype, finishing with 19 points, including four three point field goals.  JoVaughn Love (16), Ghiavonni Robison (11) and Thaddeus Handley (10) also reached double digit scoring for UAPB.

UAPB led 36-29 at halftime as the Hornets 12 turnovers in the opening 20 minutes led to 17 Golden Lions points.  Love and Mosley led the way for the home team with nine and eight points as UAPB open the game shooting 52 percent from the field.

Lewis and Brown had six each for ASU.  The Hornets shot 44 percent from the field and out rebounded UAPB 19-12.  ASU trailed by as many as 19 (22-3) midway through the first half before ASU was able to cut down on their turnovers and cut the lead to seven at the break.

"We can't find ourselves playing from behind like this and expect to win ball games consistently," Jackson said.  Hopefully the guys understand with patience and understanding what we're trying to get accomplished and trying to do what we ask them to do, we can be successful.  The thing we have to do is come out and compete from jump ball especially on defense and execute on offense like we did in the second half."

ASU will continue the present road trip when they travel to Itta Bena, Miss., to play Mississippi Valley State Monday, Jan. 12 at 7:30 p.m.
