ASU Picks Up Road Win at Alabama A&M

Jamel Waters had 18 points, five assists, six rebounds and a career-high eight steals to lead Alabama State to a 59-56 road win at Alabama A&M.  With the win, the Hornets move to 9-5 overall and remain in first place in the SWAC with a 5-0 record.

"It was a wild game," Head Coach Lewis Jackson said. "It was a hostile environment and you know our guys were just resilient.  They kept working and kept playing."

'In the first half we played terrible and we found ourselves only down three and we played just a terrible first half," Jackson said.  "We told the guys at halftime as bad as we played we were only down three.  I told them lets go out there and play Hornet basketball and see if we can get some things going and we were able to do that in the second half and it went back and forth, but it was a great team victory."

Once again the Hornets had a rough shooting opening 20 minutes and came out in the second half and shot 50 percent from the field, but the big factor was the Hornets ability to force turnovers, especially in the second half when they went to a full press which gave Alabama A&M a lot of trouble.

The press forced nine second half turnovers which ASU was able to turn into 15 points on their way to scoring 34 second-half points.

"We wanted to speed the game up because they wanted to walk it up and try to run their half court sets," Jackson said.  "We knew we had to try and do something to get it going and we knew we needed Jamel to get going after struggling in the first half.  That press with Bobby, BG (Brandon Graham), and D-Rob (DeMarcus Robinson), Jamel and big Wendell we were able to get some turnovers and easy shots around the basket and was fortunate enough to get a stop and pick up a win."

Wendell Lewis finished the game with 11 points and Bobby Brown added 10 to join Waters in double digit scoring.  Luther Page came off the bench and while he only scored two points, he did have a team-high 10 rebounds.  Waters hit seven of his 12 field goals in the second half scoring 14 of his 18 points.

ASU finished the game shooting 42 percent from the field, but struggled only hitting two of their 11 three point field goals for 18 percent and had another rough shooting game from the free throw line knocking down nine of its 21 attempts.

AAMU ((4-11/3-2 SWAC) finished the game shooting 38 percent from the field.  Their leading scorer LaDarius Tabb had a game-high 20 points and completed a double-double with 10 rebounds.  Marcus Merriweather was the only other Bulldog in double digit scoring, coming off the bench to add 10 points.

AAMU stayed in the game knocking down eight three point free throws, but like the Hornets, struggled from the free throw line only hitting six of their 13 attempts (46%).

The first half was one where the Hornets struggled only shooting 32 percent from the field as they trailed 28-25 going into the locker room.  The struggles showed at the free throw line where they only hit six of their 12 attempts.  Lewis had nine in the first half.

The Bulldogs shot 39 percent from the field but the difference in scoring was the three three point field goals they were able to knock down and the fact they out rebounded the Hornets 22-16.  Tabb had eight to lead AAMU.

The win was ASU's sixth straight and third straight road win, sweeping all three of the current road swing.

"It was big (winning all three), it was real big," Jackson said.  "We talked about going on the road and good teams can win at home, but to be a better team we were going to have to go on the road and win.  We were going to put our best foot forward and let the chips fall.  We were fortunate enough to get these wins on the road."

The Hornets will be back home for their next two games beginning Saturday, Jan. 24 when Alcorn State comes to Montgomery.  Tipoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.
