Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's Hoops Sting Grambling In SWAC Home Opener

-Montgomery    Behind an impressive career performance from Lady Hornet center Jasmine Peeples  the Alabama State women's basketball team defeated Grambling State University in their SWAC opener at home 53-30.

Peeples had a stellar all-around game as she scored a career-high 22 points and 21 rebounds, her fourth double-double performance of the season along with five blocks while going 10-14 from the field for the game.

Guard Britney Wright finished the game with 22 points and 10 rebounds achieving her sixth career double-double.

"Our ladies played great tonight," said head coach Freda Freeman-Jackson. "When you can get two athletes to get into double figures like Peeples and Wright did, that is impressive. We still did a good job defending the ball and outrebounding Grambling. Heading into our matchup against Jackson State, I feel we need to take care of the ball better as they match up with us a little better than Grambling," said Freeman-Jackson.

The Lady Hornets outrebounded the Tigers 60-33, and held GSU to just 11-57 shooting (19.3%) for the game.

After an aggressive start from both teams, the Lady Hornets were powered by a scoring barrage from the duo of Peeples and Wright who took control in the first half as ASU headed into halftime with an 18 point lead over GSU. Peeples led all scorers at the half with 14pts and 11 rebounds while shooting 7-9 from the field.  Not to be outshined, Wright added 12pts and nine rebounds to the Lady Hornet.  ASU's defense managed to disrupt GSU as they only managed to shoot 5-22 (22.7%) from the field.

Grambling's Monisha Neal led her team with eight points. Alabama State improves to 4-0 at home.

The Lady Hornets will return to action Monday, January 5, at 5:30 p.m. as they will be set to take on Jackson State University.
