Sunny skies, cool temperatures in the 50s and an established, fundamentally-sound Troy team greeted the Alabama State women's tennis squad for its season home opener as the Lady Trojans defeated the Lady Hornets 7-0 at the Olean Black Underwood Tennis Complex on Friday afternoon.
 
Unforced errors were the main culprit for ASU's opportunity to pull a win as Troy (1-2) played steady with consistent ground strokes. 
 
"Our girls fought very hard," said fourth-year Alabama State tennis coach Anuk Christiansz. "Troy is a real established team.  We're a young team and we have a long way to go in order to get to where we want to be.  We have to take care of some simple things like unforced errors."
 
Sophomore Marine Cartier followed up her victory from last match at Georgia Southern on Jan. 25 with another sound performance by pushing Troy junior Trang Huynh for the deepest match on the day, but lost in a 6-2, 7-5 defeat. 
 
"We are competing more," Christiansz said. "Last week, we fought Georgia Southern hard.  There are some positives to come out of this.  The most important thing is that the girls are positive and are working hard.  We have some injuries that are hurting us and that's something that we can't afford to have." 
 
The Lady Hornets (0-3) will get some much-needed rest as their match at South Alabama on Sunday has been postponed due to rain. 
 
ASU's next scheduled match is home versus North Alabama on Feb. 13 at 3 p.m. in a nonconference match.
