Texas Southern Pounces on Lady Hornets Basketball

Box Score The resurgent Texas Southern Lady Tigers defeated Alabama State 67-51 Saturday night, in one of the worst SWAC losses this season.

ASU fell behind by 13 at the half and could never get any closer than 11 after that. In the first game of their Texas road trip, ASU shot only 30.9% for the game, making only 17 out of 55 shots for the night.

The Lady Hornets also committed 20 turnovers and converted only 12 of their 22 free throw attempts.
Jasmine Peeples led ASU with 22 points, 16 rebounds and seven blocks.  Kayla Tucker added 14 points, which nine of her points came from around the arc.

"I am so happy for the performance that Jasmine Peeples had tonight," said head coach Freda Freeman- Jackson.  "This week she has been extremely focused since we have been here in Texas, she has been a leader.  Kayla Tucker had a solid game and I was glad to see her step up and take control of the situation like she did."

Alexus Johnson led the Texas Southern (10-9, 7-1 SWAC) with 12 points. Briana Sidney added nine.

The Lady Hornets (8-10, 4-4 SWAC) take on Prairie View Monday night at 5:30 p.m. Catch the action on bamastatesports.com/showcase.

"This road trip doesn't get any easier although Prairie View beat Texas Southern (which is ranked number one in the conference) they have the similar type of play and they are two tough teams," Freeman-Jackson said.  "We have our work cut out for us and we are going to have to make sure that we work on our defense.
