Lady Hornets open SWAC road weekend at Grambling

GRAMBLING, LA.  – The Alabama State women's soccer team will travel this weekend for their first road conference matches this season when the Lady Hornets open at SWAC opponent Grambling State on Friday at 3 p.m. at the GSU Soccer Complex.

The Lady Hornets (1-7-1, 1-0 SWAC) will look to build off their 1-0 conference-opening win against Howard last Friday.

In the match, junior forward Aaliyah Lewis scored her 11th career game-winning goal at ASU in the 58th minute to provide the difference.

However, Alabama State will be without her and twin sister Ariela Lewis as both players will be serving a two-match suspension for receiving red cards in the Howard match.

Both were marked for fighting in a physical back-and-forth contest.

In last season's meeting with Grambling, the Lady Hornets were backed by Aa. Lewis' hat trick and a one goal, two assist performance by senior Shelbi Vienna-Hallam

Alabama State won the match 4-0.

The Lady Tigers (0-5, 0-2 SWAC) is coming off a 7-1 defeat to Texas Southern last Friday.

Grambling State has been outscored 33-3 thus far this season.

The Lady Hornets are not only coming off a big victory, but also a week in which the team earned their first SWAC weekly award of the season.

Shyann Cordova was named the SWAC Defender of the Week for her role in stopping Howard top scorer Kela Gray.

"We had a great result," said Alabama State women's soccer coach Jodie Smith.

"For her [Cordova] to have the first one of the year and for her to be a freshman, we hope that leads to many more while she's here.  She's very versatile.  We knew that when we recruited her.  She's been a forward and a defender.  We can use her on the outside and she has played a lot of different roles.  We're still trying to see where she ultimately winds up.  But, being versatile, helps because we can put her in the lineup in different areas."

Leaders

Alabama State: Ariela Lewis (three goals), Aaliyah Lewis (two assists), Ar. Lewis (seven points), Gianna Guyot (71 saves).

Grambling State: Ciara Dawson, Jemila Davis (one goal apiece), no assists, Dawson and Davis (two points apiece).
