JACKSON, Miss. ā The Alabama State women's volleyball team completed day one of the SWAC Round-Up with a sparkling 3-0 record on Friday at T.B. Ellis Gymnasium.
The Lady Hornets (10-12 overall, 3-1 SWAC) won nine of 10 sets on the day that was spread out over 1 p.m. , 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. start times.Ā
In the rematch of last year's 2014 SWAC Championship, ASU finished strong to beat Southern 3-1 (25-18, 15-25, 25-17, 25-11).Ā
Senior
Tiara Kelley led the Lady Hornets with a season-high 12 kills with a .292 hitting percentage while
Briana Dorsey and
Rachel Smith added seven kills apiece.Ā
ASU saved their best set for last, finishing with a match-best .367 team hitting percentage in the fourth set.
Leading 15-8, the Lady Hornets took command by winning six of the next seven points behind two kills apiece by Kelley,
Lorena Rosario and Dorsey.Ā
Two more kills from Rosario and a final one from
Amber Bennett sealed it up.Ā
Myla Marshall led with defense with seven blocks and four digs and added four kills.
In the mid-afternoon match, ASU swept Grambling State 3-0 (25-14, 26-24, 25-14) in the team's first meeting in two years.Ā
The Lady Hornets swung for a match-best .462 in the opening set and then cruised on the strength of play from Marshall and Rosario, who provided nine kills apiece.Ā
Kori Kutsch and
Riley MacDonald worked in tandem in the two-setter formation to combine for 35 assists and
Jamie Coleman led the defense with 10 digs.Ā
In the evening match, the Lady Hornets dispatched of a freshmen-laden Prairie View A&M squad 3-0 (25-13, 25-11, 25-14).
ASU made quick work to capture the first set in less than 20 minutes and took the match in 52 minutes.
The Lady Hornets turned up their play for a .372 overall team hitting percentage.
Amber Bennet led the offense, this time, with a team-best 10 kills and seven blocks.Ā
Marshall had seven kills and a career-high 11 blocks.Ā
Coleman had 11 digs while MacDonald and Kutsch combined for 29 assists.Ā
Despite the wins against teams within the conference, all matches did not count towards the SWAC standings.Ā
Next, Alabama State will play two matches on Saturday against Arkansas-Pine Bluff at 3 p.m. and Texas Southern at 5 p.m. to conclude play in the SWAC Round-Up.Ā
