MONTGOMERY – Alabama State University Head Football Coach Brian Jenkins took some time out of this busy week to pay a visit to E.D. Nixon Elementary School. The Hornets football team has chosen Nixon as its adopted elementary school. Â
The students at Nixon had a door decorating contest in connection with the upcoming Magic City Classic. Some of the doors were decorated to support Alabama State; other doors were decorated in support of the Hornets Magic City Classic opponents.
Â
Jenkins awarded prizes to the classrooms with the top three door decorations and of course they all were decorated with "Black and Gold."
Â
"We had a decorating door contest to judge and me and my staff tries to stay involved with as many schools in the area as we can," Jenkins said. "You have to invest in the young people and this school has adopted us as much as we have adopted them and it's always fun and good and exciting for me to spend some time with some young people and express to them how important the message their principal, teachers and administrators are trying to send them when it comes to education and different things like that."
Â
"Not only is it a door contest it's a chance to reach out to the community and enjoy the young people and everybody that's involved."
Â
It's back to the practice field for Jenkins and the team as they continue to work towards Saturday's Magic City Classic Showdown. Even with the work on the field, there is still plenty of work to do off the field. Wednesday Jenkins will be joined by
Kourtney Berry,
Kerry Williams and
Daniel Duhart at the Magic City Classic Press Conference. The event will begin at 10 a.m. and will be held at Coca Cola United in Birmingham.
