Magic City Classic
BIRMINGHAM – The RV's are in place, the fans are arriving by the hundreds and the players will be arriving in Birmingham Friday for the 74th edition of the Magic City Classic presented by Coca Cola. Â
The two teams have actually played each other 78 times with the Hornets holding a slim 39-36-3 lead in the series. ASU has won three of the last four, but last year's 37-36 loss has been lingering on the minds of ASU players and fans since that final field goal attempt went wide left with only four seconds left in the game.
Â
After dropping the first three games of the season, the Hornets (3-4/3-3 SWAC) are playing much better winning three of its past four games. A win Saturday would even the overall record for the year and put the Hornets one game over .500 in conference action.
Â
The Hornets offense is averaging a solid 27 points per game and it doesn't matter who is under center to guide the offense as both quarterbacks have had success.
Â
Senior
Daniel Duhart seems to have bounced back from the first-game injury, which caused him to miss three games. He is thrown for 580 yards and four touchdowns while completing over 75 percent of his passes.
Â
Freshman
Ellis Richardson has also shown to be a threat, both when he tucks the ball to run and when he passes. He is completing 61 percent of his passes for 600 yards and six scores. His rushing has accounted for 305 yards and another six touchdowns.
Â
Mr. everything
Khalid Thomas has turned out to be one of the top all-around backs in the conference. He leads ASU in both rushing (368 yards) and receptions (28). His 261 receiving yards is second on the team. He is ninth in the conference in rushing, tied for sixth in receptions per game and seventh in all-purpose yards.
Â
On defense
Kourtney Berry continues to show why he is a finalist for the 2015 STATS FCS Defensive Player of the Year Watch List. His 88 tackles not only lead the team, but his closest competitor in the SWAC is over 20 total stops behind him.
Â
Nationally Berry is fourth in tackles per game (12.6), sixth in total tackles (88) and tied for 27
th in solo stops (38).
Â
While Alabama A&M's (2-4/2-2 SWAC) record may not look that good, looks can sometimes be deceiving. AAMU lost to both FCS member Cincinnati (52-10) and undefeated Coastal Carolina (55-0) that just happens to be the top team in the FCS. Take away both of those losses and the Bulldogs are averaging 30 points per game in SWAC play.
Â
That is a number that is troubling to the ASU coaching staff. De'Ang Ballard is leading the AAMU offense and has a stellar 139.7 efficiency rating. He has thrown for almost 1,000 yards on only 50 completions. He has seven touchdown passes despite missing one game due to injury.
Â
Harvey Harris leads the rushing attack with 311 yards rushing on 67 attempts. He is averaging 4.6 yards per carry and over 62 yards per game.
Â
Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. at Legion Field and will be shown live on ESPN3. A tape delay broadcast is scheduled for later that night on ESPNU. The game can also be heard live on the ASU Hornets Sports network and HSRN Satellite Radio. For more information check out Game Day Central or the Magic City Classic's website.
