MONTGOMERY, ALA.  – The Alabama State women's soccer team met Southern with fierce determination early, often and throughout to capture a 6-0 home conference victory at the ASU Soccer Complex Friday night on the campus-wide Think Pink weekend in support of Breast Cancer Awareness month.
Â
The Lady Hornets (3-8-1, 3-1 SWAC) wasted very little time in finding the back of the net as
Aaliyah Lewis began by rifling a shot from deep that deflected off the goalkeeper's hand in the ninth minute.Â
In the 16
th minute,
Ariela Lewis and
Shyann Cordova worked together from the corner to find
Shelbi Vienna-Hallam in front of the net for a header to put ASU on top 2-0 heading into the break.Â
Alabama State, winners in three of its past four matches, held a hefty advantage with possession and outshot Southern 18-8 including 11-5 for shots on goal.
"We were sharing the ball," said ASU head coach
Jodie Smith.Â
"We were able to put a lot of pressure on them offensively, which helped us out in the back. Gianna [Guyot] was able to get her third career shutout. It was big for us. The more that we can do offensively will definitely relieve the pressure on our back line."
AA. Lewis and Ar. Lewis were just getting started for a big night as the sisters combined for three goals and four assists on the night.
"Certainly, Aaliyah [Lewis] and Ariela [Lewis] stir the drink for us on offense," Smith said. Â
"But, when they get other people involved, we became very dangerous offensively."Â
It was largely a collective team effort as the Lady Hornet defense stuffed any quality chances on the goal for the Southern offense and freshmen
Larissa White and
Mooregan Elder each got into the scoring act with a goal apiece.Â
White dribbled around her defender and showed some nice footwork to score almost immediately to begin the second half while Elder capped the scoring in the 68
th minute on a shot into the far side corner.Â
The Lewis sisters teamed up to each score another goal apiece in the second half to push the lead to 5-0.Â
Â
ASU goalkeeper
Gianna Guyot made five saves to secure her third shutout in the last 15 days.Â
ASU continues the home stand Sunday for another conference match against Jackson State at 1 p.m. at the ASU Soccer Complex.Â
