Hornets Ready to Host Prairie View

MONTGOMERY – Two of the hottest teams in the Southwestern Athletic Conference will meet at ASU Stadium Saturday at 2 p.m. when the Hornets will host the Panthers of Prairie View A&M.

While ASU (5-4/5-3 SWAC) are winners of three straight and five of its last six, the Panthers (6-2/6-1 SWAC) have won five consecutive and six of seven lighting up the scoreboard.

PVAMU is averaging a league-leading 44.4 points per game and have scored over 50 points three times and over 40 points in another three games.

Leading the Panthers offensive explosion will be running back Johnta Hebert, a 2014 FCS All-American who is well on his way to reaching the plateau again this season.  He is arguably one of the, if not the top offensive performer in the SWAC.  He enters Saturday's contest with 624 yards rushing, 537 yards receiving and 455 yards in kick returns.

His 1,616 all-purpose yards is tops in the SWAC and second in all of the FCS.

Trey Green runs the Panthers top offense from his quarterback position.  The Hornets had to face the top quarterback in the conference last week and this week Green enters the game as the SWAC's second leading passer.

He is averaging 270 yards passing per game and completing over 59 percent of his passes.  He has tossed 18 touchdown passes, which is second in the league, compared to only three interceptions.

Hebert is his top receiver, but Nick Pitre has 354 yards on 20 catches and has six touchdown receptions.

On defense the Panthers have struggled.  Most of the season they have been able to outscore their opponents as their defense is giving up 38 points per game, and gave up 70 points to Grambling early in the season.

To counter the Panthers, the Hornets may turn to their running game which has consistently gotten better each game.  Khalid Thomas has taken over in the backfield and has turned in three consecutive 100-yard performances.  He is now sixth in the conference with 607 yards rushing averaging over five yards per carry.

Thomas is not just a good runner, like Hebert, he is a solid receiver.  His 30 receptions are a team high and those receptions have resulted in 270 yards and two scores.

Daniel Duhart has moved into the starting role as quarterback the past three games and has led the Hornets to those consecutive wins.  Duhart is completing a strong 70 percent of his passes and has thrown for 823 yards and six scores even after missing three games due to an injury suffered in the season-opener.

Ellis Richardson is on the sidelines and is back to 100% and could be used to help bolster the Hornets rushing attack.  He is second on the team in rushing with 427 yards and a team-high seven rushing scores.  Richardson has completed 58 percent of his passes for over 600 yards and another six touchdowns.

Leading the Hornets defensive efforts continues to be FCS All-America candidate Kourtney Berry.  He continues to be leads the SWAC in tackles with 108 which is the fifth highest number in FCS football.

Bradley Street (68 tackles) and Daerius Washington (66 tackles) are 2-3 for the Hornets in total stops.  Washington is one of the top tackles for lost yardage in the SWAC with nine stops behind the line of scrimmage which have resulted in 32 lost yards.
Saturday's action is the SWAC finale for the Hornets this season and can be heard live over the ASU Hornets Sports Network.  All of the information for the game can be found on bamastatesports.com.  Check with Game Day Central on Saturday morning for any game information you need before your make your way to ASU Stadium.
