BIRMINGHAM – Another tough road game for the Hornets and another close score, but this time the Hornets came out on the short end of a 72-70 final score at reigning Conference USA Champions Alabama-Birmingham.
Â
"Good ballgame and we knew it was going to be a tough game from the beginning," Head Coach
Lewis Jackson said. "The players played hard and knew what we were trying to get accomplished and they left everything on the floor."
Â
"We didn't do everything right, but the guys competed hard and they guys are working hard and playing tough and we just have to work hard to get better every day."
Â
The Hornets had plenty of chances but a sub-par shooting night from the free throw line really hurt the Hornets chances as they only hit 14 of their 25 free throws.
Â
As bad as the free throw shooting was it was three free throws by
Torloft Thomas that evened the score at 70 with 9.6 seconds left in the game.
Â
A mistake was made by the Hornets on UAB's final offensive possession as a foul was called on a Hornet player and UAB's Robert Brown hit two free throws with four seconds left to give UAB the 72-70 lead.
Â
The game was not over as
Jamel Waters was able to catch the ball at halfcourt and went in for a layup, but his shot was blocked out of bounds with a half a second left. The Hornets tried to get a tap at the basket on the final throw in, but was unable to get the ball in the hoop and the score stood.
Â
The Hornets had five players reach double digits with
Terrance LeFlore leading the way with a career-high 16 points.Â
Corvon Butler came off the bench and had 13 and
Bobby Brown added 11. Thomas and Waters ended with 10 each.
Â
ASU shot 42 percent from the field and hit 52 percent in the second half as they came back from a seven-point halftime deficit. ASU only hit six of their 24 three point attempts and the 56 percent from the free throw line was the killer.
Â
ASU lost the rebounding battle to the much-taller Blazers 41-28. Waters had a team-high four and had a game-high three steals to go with his three assists.
Â
UAB used their inside strength to shoot 50 percent from the field and shot 17 more free throws and hit 13 more, which was the difference in the game.
Â
Chris Cokley led UAB with 16 and completed a double-double with 11 rebounds. Dirk Williams and Tosin Mehinti added 10 points each.
Â
"We made some adjustments at halftime and talked about getting good shots," Jackson said. "In the second half we came out and settled down and we got into what we were doing and running our offense and made the comeback."
Â
UAB lead 37-30 at halftime backed by the 13 free throws they were able to hit out of their 17 attempts. Denzell Watts led the Blazers with seven points and Williams added six.
Â
The Hornets played the final eight minutes of the first half without their leading scorer Waters who picked up his second foul at the 12 minute mark. The Hornets actually led 13-12 when he left the game.
Â
Thomas had seven points to lead ASU in the opening 20 minutes and LeFlore also had seven with his final basket coming at the horn ending the opening half.
Â
ASU will not have long before they are back on the court. They will travel to Mercer Thursday Nov. 19 for a 6 p.m. tip against the Bears.
