Basketball Closes Out November Schedule On the Road At Georgia Tech

The Alabama State University women's basketball team will close out the non-conference road part of the season against Georgia Tech, Tuesday night at the McCarmish Pivilion in Atlanta, Ga. for a 4 p.m. central time start.

The Lady Hornets will enter tomorrow's contest at 1-2 winning their first match up against Siena 57-53 in the consolation Preseason WNIT game.

Georgia Tech is 3-1, winning their first three games on their court before falling to Georgia (78-66) at their place. Last season, the Lady Hornets fell to the Yellow Jackets in Atlanta 77-53.

"Playing on the road is always challenging. That's something I always say," said head coach Freda Freeman-Jackson.  "When playing against a team like Georgia Tech, we know that we to be very competitive and keep up good pace.  We need to stay focused and play our game to the best of the ability.

The Yellow Jackets are led in scoring by Aaliyah Whiteside who is averaging 21.3 ppg.  Georgia Tech has two other members of their squad who has double digits in scoring averages.  Katarina Vuckovic is averaging 14.0 ppg and teammate Rddreka Rogers is averaging 10.5 points per game.  Vockovic  is also leading the team in rebounding averaging 7.0 rpg. As a team, GT averages 85.2 ppg.

"This will be another tough matchup for us," Freeman-Jackson said.  "I like scheduling these types of games because they are competitive and this provides us assistance as a team of where we need to be and prepare us for our conference play. We have our work cut out for us.  These ladies are tall and lean and tough so I know we are going to have to step our game up in order to stay in the game."

Alabama State is led in scoring by preseason Player of the Year Britney Wright.  The junior is leading the team averaging 14.0 ppg, while also pulling down 6.0 rebounds per game.  Jasmine Peeples is slowly making adjustments as she has been out most of the preseason.  She is averaging 6.7 ppg and 5.7 rebounds.  The preseason Defensive Player of the Year is leading the team in blocks with five on the season so far.

"As a team, we are marking our average and we know that Britney and Jasmine are going to do what they need to do, but we need more out of everybody.  Ashanti Spencer has come in, and has done some things for us and has been playing a lot more aggressive ball this year. She's scoring when we need her to, but we can't just score and not play defense.  We have to play on both ends of the court," Freeman-Jackson said of her team.
