NICEVILLE, Fla. – Alabama State University ran into a hot-shooting Chattanooga team and fell 95-58 in the semi-final game of the Emerald City Classic.
Â
"This was a setback for us," Head Coach
Lewis Jackson said. "We didn't play any defense today. We left their players open the entire game and they did not miss. We had too many let downs on defense and let them do whatever they wanted to do."
Â
"This is the best team we have faced, but we could have played much better. We still have a lot of work to do."
Â
ASU (1-3) trailed by 16 at halftime and came out and actually cut the lead to down to 12 in the first couple of possessions, but that would be as close as they would get. The Mocs caught fire shooting 74 percent in the second half and ASU could not match the taller Mocs basket for basket.
Â
Chattanooga (4-1) even hit 10 of 16 three point field goals in the second 20 minutes en route to scoring 57 second half points and finishing the game shooting 68 percent from the field.
Â
ASU shot 37 percent in the second half, but did hit six of their 13 three point attempts.Â
Bobby Brown led the Hornets with 14 points and
Jamel Waters added 11. Waters only played 20 minutes due to foul trouble the whole game. He picked up three fouls in the first half.
Â
"We didn't do a lot on offense today," Jackson said. "They had a lot to do with that. They are long and tall and athletic. They harassed us all the way up the floor and we didn't respond very well."
Â
The Hornets did a better job on the boards winning the rebounding battle 39-31, but 16 Hornet turnovers led to 15 points for UTC and the Mocs used their height to outscore ASU 44-20 in the paint.
Â
The Hornets had a cold-shooting first half and trailed 38-22 at halftime. ASU shot 29 percent compared to 59 percent for the Mocs. ASU did out rebound the taller members of the Southern Conference 25-13, but 11 turnovers hurt the Hornet efforts to score more points.
Â
Free throw shooting was also a problem in the opening 20 minutes as Chattanooga shot 15 free throws hitting nine while the Hornets only got to the free throw line three times hitting two.
Â
The Hornets will face Chicago State in their final game of the Emerald Coast Classic. The tipoff is scheduled for tomorrow (Saturday) at 11 a.m.
