MONTGOMERY, Ala.  – Five-set thrillers against SWAC East Division opponents were commonplace this week for the Alabama State volleyball team.
For the second time in five days, the Lady Hornets found themselves in a match that went down to the wire.
But, this time, ASU completed the comeback all the way and pulled out the big plays in rallying back from two sets down to outlast Alabama A&M 3-2 (23-25, 14-25, 25-18, 25-18, 15-9) Friday on Senior Night at Lockhart Gymnasium.
The Lady Hornets (15-13, 4-2 SWAC) have now won nine of 10 and have positioned themselves to earn the No. 2 seed for the SWAC Tournament that begins on Nov. 20 in Baton Rouge, La.Â
They have two remaining SWAC contests at Mississippi Valley State and Alcorn State on Nov. 13 and 14.Â
ASU beat each opponent in straight sets earlier this season.
Chelsey Scott and
Rachel Smith led ASU with 16 kills apiece and
Kori Kutsch had a career-high 45 assists, seven digs and four aces.
The seniors came through on Senior Night for the Lady Hornets in the fifth set.
Myla Marshall,
Amber Bennett, and Scott each had two kills in the decisive set. Freshman
Kimeko Bennett also had a pair of kills in the set.Â
Lady Bulldogs (10-22, 4-3 SWAC) were led by Ashundria McNeal, who had a game-high 18 kills.
Next, ASU will travel to play at UAB on Tuesday at 7 p.m. Â
