JACKSON, Miss. – It was not the prettiest of sights, but the Alabama State Hornets were able to escape a rain-soaked Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium for a 17-12 win over Jackson State.
Â
"It was a good win, it was a sloppy game and it was good to see both teams be resilient and give their everything, but a win is a win and we'll take it," Head Coach
Brian Jenkins said. "On a night like this with the weather being the way it is I think our guys answered the bell many times. Our guys always kept the faith and kept going and found a way to finish it."
Â
JSU (3-6/3-3SWAC) came into the game with the league's top passing game, and the Hornets were able to keep the Tigers at a minimum only allowing 133 yards passing, more than 200 yards below their average.
Â
In fact the Hornets may have turned in their best outing of the season holding JSU to 230 total yards of offense.
Â
"They (defense) did some good things," Jenkins said. "Our offense stalled a little bit in the first half, but our defense bowed their necks and caused some turnovers and put us in a good position to win the ball game. I'm just happy to get out of here with a victory. We are going to enjoy this one and get back and get to the drawing board and get ready for the next one."
Â
Khalid Thomas led a rushing attack that rushed for 229 yards and for the third consecutive game he broke the 100-yard barrier rushing for a game-high 139 yards.
Â
Freshman
Ellis Richardson split time with
Daniel Duhart at quarterback rushing for 69 yards and a score.
Â
ASU (5-4/5-3 SWAC) finished the game with 331 yards of total offense and holding the ball for over 40 minutes of the 60 minute game.
Â
"I was just happy we could do anything in this type of weather," Jenkins added. "We are playing in mud and our guys just did a good job."
Â
After JSU blocked a punt and returned it 20 yards for a scored and cut ASU's lead to 10-6, the Hornets were able to score what turned out to be the game winner on a halfback pass from
Stanley Robinson to
DeMario Bell from 26 yards out to put ASU up 17-6.
Â
JSU scrambled at the end of the game and was able to score on an 11 yard runs with three minutes left. From there the Hornets recovered the onsides kick and ran out all but nine seconds of the clock. JSU ran one play but could not advance the ball and ASU gets the win.
Â
Despite three fumbles and losing two of those in the first 30 minutes, the Hornets went into the locker room with a 10-0 lead. Richardson came in early in the first quarter and led the Hornets on a 15 play, 94 yard drive which he culminated with a two yard scoring run.
Â
The other score came on a 27 yard field goal from
David Albert with 1:29 left in the half.
Â
ASU's defense stifled the JSU offense in the first half only allowing 24 total yards on 24 plays. Ivy only completed two of his 11 passes for 10 yards before missing the final series due to an injury. JSU only rushed for seven yards on 10 carries.
Â
ASU will end the season playing their final two games at home. Next week Prairie View comes to ASU for the Hornets final SWAC game of the season. The kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
