Jenkins Addresses Media at SWAC Teleconference

MONTGOMERY – Head Football Coach Brian Jenkins talked with members of the national media Monday on the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Coaches Teleconference.  Jenkins took some time out to discuss the rain-soaked win at Jackson State over the weekend and looked ahead to the league's hottest team, Prairie View, coming to Montgomery this weekend.

"The win was a good victory for our program," Jenkins said.  "It was a hard fought win in horrendous conditions and just to see our team go out and play the way they did, focused and playing with discipline under the conditions and also facing a resilient football program in Jackson State was just really good for our program.  The guys stayed the course the whole game and found a way to win."

"Our defense stepped up to the challenge multiple times and found a way to turn the tide and not let Jackson State gain momentum.  So it was a really good victory under the conditions that we had to play in.  The field was in really bad shape, but I'm not sure anyone could have done any better to have that field in better shape.  I mean it was so much rain that fell in a short period of time, but nevertheless our guys stayed the course and stayed mentally tough and found a way to come away with the victory.  Winning is always good whether it's a pretty win or an ugly win it's always good."

Prairie View will come into Montgomery this weekend bringing a four game winning streak and wins over both Southern and Alcorn State, last year's divisional champions.  The Panthers rolled up 40 points in winning at Alcorn this past weekend.

"We have a tough contest coming up this Saturday with Prairie View and hopefully we can play well enough to win," Jenkins said.  "We are going to have to play the best we have played all year against this Prairie View group.  They have a high-powered offense, a quarterback that's exceptional, a back that is tremendous and I think they have one or two NFL caliber guys at receiver."

"They are playing with a lot of confidence right now so our defense has their work cut out for them.  We are really going to have to buckle down and not make the mistakes we made early in the season, and they are going to have to buckle down and make sure football fundamentals are sound and solid on Saturday so we can take advantage of some things and not allow our opponents to create disadvantages for us."

The Hornets and Panthers are slated to kick off at 2 p.m. at ASU Stadium.  Catch all the live play-by-play on the ASU Hornets Sports Network beginning at 1:30 p.m.
