Lady Hornets Sting Mobile In Home Victory

Led by sharpshooter Kayla Tucker's career-high 18 points, Alabama State women's basketball team routed a 71-56 win over Mobile in a non-conference game Saturday afternoon in the Dunn-Oliver Acadome.

Alabama State (2-7) exposed why no lead is safe when facing the Lady Hornets' stingy offense and swarming defense, in their first home win of the season.

Late in the fourth ASU went on a 12-3 run to stifle Mobile's (6-4) attempt at mounting a comeback run to end the game.

After trailing Mobile 30-19, ASU navigated an astounding 29-to-6 run of the course of 10 minutes between the second and third quarter to give them a 48-36 lead.

ASU's defense had eight steals, caused 21 Mobile turnovers and score 17 points off turnovers.

Tucker converted a career-high 6 three-pointers.

Shamyiah Smith notched a career-high seven assist along with tying her career-highs points (13) and steals (4).

The Lady Hornets had four players with double-digit scoring; Tucker's 18, Smith's 13 along with Britney Wright and Jasmine Peeples each with 11.

Kayla Stephens also contributed a season-high nine rebounds along with seven points, two blocks and two assist.

ASU outrebound Mobile 39-29 which lead to 14 second chance points.

Once limit to 13 points in the first quarter, ASU's offense began running on all cylinders outscoring Mobile in the next three quarters.

Alabama State women's basketball will have two weeks until they return back to action to begin SWAC play as they face off against Jackson State Saturday, January 2, 2016, in Jackson, Miss. at the Williams Assembly Center.

The contest is slated for a 3 p.m tip off.
