MONTGOMERY – Alabama State withstood a furious three-point shooting Auburn Montgomery team to pull out an 80-78 win over the Warhawks.
Â
AUM hit an astounding 13 three point shots, which equaled half of their total points with Reagan Eubanks hitting six, including three consecutive in the second half to cut into ASU's 11-point lead (49-38).
Â
"You have to give it to Coach Cheaney and his team," Head Coach
Lewis Jackson said. "They came in here with a plan and they shot the ball extremely well."
Â
Bobby Brown and
Jamel Waters led the Hornets with 15 points each with Brown grabbing a game-high 10 rebounds.
Â
ASU's
Mikel Tyson came off the bench in the first half to get the Hornets going after ASU fell behind by 15. He had 10-first half points and finished with a career-high 13 points.
Â
ASU finished the game shooting 49 percent from the field, but struggled on their three point field goals only hitting two of 18. The Hornets had a chance to put the game away from the free throw line but missed three of four in the final 23 seconds. They finished the game only hitting 18 off 33 (55%) from the charity stripe.
Â
AUM had a strong offensive showing. They entered the game averaging 85 points per game and almost matched that number.
Â
Phillip Rankin had 24 points in only 26 minutes of action as he got in foul trouble and actually sat out most of the second half. Reagan Eubanks finished with 21 points and a team-high eight rebounds.
Â
Other double digit scorers for the Warhawk were Spencer Jones and Jeffery White who both finished with 12.
Â
AUM (3-4) shot 46 percent from the field and 33 percent from the three point line (13-39). Like ASU, they struggled from the free throw line hitting five of their 12 attempts.
Â
"You have to give AUM credit they shot the ball well, but we are not a good defensive team," Jackson said. "We have got to get back to practice and work on becoming a better defensive team."
Â
ASU had to make a huge run in the first half in taking a 38-34 halftime lead. AUM came out of the gates shooting over 70 percent the first 10 minutes of the game. Led by Rankin's 16 points AUM built a 26-11 lead before the Hornets started to cut into the lead.
Â
Over the final 12 minutes of the opening half ASU outscored AUM 27-7 while holding AUM scoreless for 6:12. ASU finally caught the Warhawks and took their first lead of the game on a Tyson basket with 1:54 left.
Â
Rankin stopped AUM's drought when he connected on a three to even the score at 34.Â
Corvon Butler and
Chidozie Omile scored back-to-back baskets in the final minute to give ASU the lead.
Â
The Hornets will take several days off for exams before getting back on the court. ASU's next game will be a Dec. 13 affair at Jacksonville State. The tip is scheduled for 3 p.m.
