Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Lady Hornets Come Up Short To Savannah State

Britney Wright's double-double of 14 points and 13 rebounds wasn't enough to subdue Savannah State, as ASU fell 60-49 Saturday evening at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome.

In the battle of the 2015 MECA champions vs. SWAC champions and a battle of HBCU pride, Alabama State women's basketball team fell in the back-and-forth match-up, stuttering on offense in the fourth quarter the Lady Hornets only scored five points.

"Well again we struggled to score when we needed to. We missed too many lay ups. We had a lot of opportunities to score and we just weren't able to put the ball in the basket." said Head Coach Freda Freeman-Jackson.

Kayla Tucker and Danielle Clark made three 3-pointers scoring nine points each. Raven Russell added six points off of the bench.

The Lady Hornets in the third quarter led an astonishing 17-3 run, which was steered by Wright's seven points in the third. Jasmine Pepples scored five points in the quarter, her only points of the game.

"We have to get better play out of Jasmine Peeples. I think she really struggled on the offensive end; they had a large center which caused her some major problems," said Freeman-Jackson.
With ASU's turnovers and fouls troubles continuing at the beginning of the third quarter Savannah State went on a 7-0 run, the Lady Hornets blazed back going on a run of their own.

Zomoria Clark's tip-in at the buzzer sent ASU down only by one point going into the fourth quarter 45-44.

After a potent first quarter, ASU was simmered down by Savannah State in the second quarter. ASU's offense was limited to only three points, due to four turnovers, foul calls, and shooting 1-of-12 from the field.

Savannah State led 27-24 at the end of the half.

"At the half,  I spoke to them about finishing quarters, not doing well in the second quarter only scoring three points hurts us and, that we can't win any games with that big of a drop off in a quarter," said Freeman-Jackson.

The Lady Hornets opened the game scorching, connecting on 7-of-16 43.8% from the field and from behind the arc 4-5 (80%).

Sharpshooters Tucker and Clark both scored six points to led ASU to a 12-6 run to end the quarter with a 21-16 point lead.

"I would hate to think we are not in the type of condition that we need to be in, because in the second quarter we only scored three points, we comeback we do pretty well and then we struggle again in the fourth quarter," believed Coach Freeman-Jackson. "So that is an indication the we are not in the type of condition that we need to be in and we're going to need to address that or we might be playing too many minutes at the wrong time."

Alabama State women's basketball will have an extended time until they return back to action to host interstate opponent Troy Tuesday, December 15 at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome.

The contest is slated for 6 p.m.

"This time in between games is a good opportunity for us to get back to winning basketball, to go back to fundamentals to get better as a team," said Coach Freeman-Jackson.
