DeMarcus Robinson scored a game-high 23 points, including a career-high six three point field goals, to lead Alabama State to a hard-fought 71-67 win at Alcorn State. With the win the Hornets remain at the top of the Southwestern Athletic Conference. Â
"We got the win and we're grateful for that, but we have to play smart on the road," Head Coach
Lewis Jackson said. "We got out to a decent lead early and then we got away from what we were doing and as all teams do they are going to make a run and they made a run."
"We started one pass, shoot the ball, no pass and jumping up and shooting the ball and we just got away from what we were doing. We thought we had them down and they start showing emotion like they were going to finish the game and we allowed them to get back in the game."
Â
ASU (15-7/11-2 SWAC) built a 19-point lead (53-34) with 12:40 left in the game before Alcorn State started to cut into the Hornets lead. Alcorn was able to cut the lead to two points several times in the final minute of the game with the final coming at 67-69 with five seconds left before
Jamel Waters knocked down two free throws for the final four point margin.
Â
Maurice Strong and Waters joined Robinson in double digit scoring with 13 and 11. Waters had a game-high five assists and three steals.
Â
The Hornets finished the game shooting 50 percent from the field and hit nine of their 15 three point field goals for 60 percent. ASU helped let Alcorn back in the game by only hitting 12 of their 19 free throws.
Â
LeAntwan Luckett scored 19 points on seven of 20 shooting to lead Alcorn State (5-21/4-10 SWAC). George Thomas, who entered the game averaging 2.8 points per game, came off the bench and almost shot Alcorn back into the lead with 17 points, including hitting all five of his three point attempts. Tamarcio Wilson also came off the bench to score 14.
Â
ASU out rebounded the host 31-26 with Strong's seven leading the way.Â
Brandon Graham came off the bench to grab five boards to go along with his six points.
Â
"We have to play a lot smarter on the road," Jackson said. "We went in up 10 at halftime and we came out and just didn't get it done in the second half."
Â
ASU shot a sizzling 54 percent in the first half in building a 37-27 lead. Robinson led the way with 14 points as he hit four of his five three point field goals. Brown had eight with two three point field goals. The Hornets finished the half hitting seven of their 10 three point field goals for 70 percent.
Â
Alcorn stayed closed as Thomas knocked down three three point field goals of his own for a team-high nine points. Luckett had seven as Alcorn finished the half shooting 33 percent from the field.
Â
"We have a veteran ball club and when you're still in the hunt for something like we are, these types of things can't happen," Jackson said. "We have to play smart and we need someone on the court checking the guys on what they need to be doing and we have to execute our offense, hit free throws and play defense and get stops."
Â
ASU will continue the road trip at Southern Monday night at 8 p.m. The game can be heard live on bamastatesports.com and will also be shown live on ESPNU.
