Lady Hornets drop first two in Stetson Tournament

DELAND, Fla. – The Alabama State softball team saw a tough first day at the Stetson Tournament losing 11-3 to Troy in six innings and 10-0 to host Stetson in five innings on Friday.

In the early game, the Trojans grabbed an early 5-0 lead behind a three-run double to right field by Khadija Neely in the top of the third.

The Lady Hornets struck back with a run in the bottom half of the inning when junior first baseman Carly Evans drove in Valerie Centeno on a RBI single.

Troy added two runs in the fourth on a two-run home run by Michelle Phelps.

ASU sophomore right fielder Brittney Wilson answered with a solo home run, her third of the season, to left center.

After Troy (10-7) added another run in the top of the fifth, Alabama State (3-14) put up its final run when Aleesa Yanez was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Centeno batted 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Alabama State left nine runners on base.

In the late game, Stetson led 4-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth inning before breaking it open with a six-run inning sparked by two home runs.
