CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Alabama State baseball team erased three deficits and held on to defeat The Citadel 15-14 Saturday in four-hour game at Riley Field.
The Hornets trailed 4-1 after two innings, 10-6 after three innings and 13-11 after seven before scoring once in the eighth and two in the ninth to get the win.
Waldyvan Estrada (four RBI),
Joseph Estrada (three RBI),
Cesar Rivera, P.J. Biocic,
Chris Biocic, and
Yamil Pagan each had two hits in the 14-hit attack for Alabama State (4-5).
In the eighth,
Einar Muniz singled to left and was pinch run for by
Ryan Thompson.
Chris Biocic followed with a single, before
Hunter Allen's double down the right field line scored Thompson to tie the score at 13-13.
In the ninth,
Joseph Estrada reached on a throwing error and advanced to second on the play.
Marcus Swint then laid down a sacrifice bunt and was safe on throwing error as Estrada scored to put the Hornets ahead. With two outs,
Chris Biocic beat out an infield single, as P.J. Biocic, who had reached on a fielder's choice, scored on the play.
The Citadel scored one in the ninth and had the tying run on second base, but
Armando Ruiz came on to get the final out and his second save as Michael Estevez (1-0) got the win in relief.
Trailing 4-1 after two innings, Alabama State scored five times in the third. Pagan led off with a double and advanced to third on a passed ball.
Joseph Estrada singled to right field to score Pagan. After
Joseph Estrada advanced to second on a throwing error and a strikeout, P.J. Biocic singled to right field, and Muniz was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
Chris Biocic then walked to force home
Joseph Estrada to cut the deficit to 4-3. After an RBI groundout scored P.J. Biocic to tie the score,
Waldyvan Estrada's two-run single to left field scored Muniz and
Chris Biocic for a 6-4 Hornet lead.
Trailing 10-6 after three innings, the Hornets tied the game in the fourth. Pagan led off with a triple to right center, and scored on a sacrifice fly by
Joseph Estrada. Rivera then reached on a fielding error ahead of a P.J. Biocic single through the left side. Muniz then walked to load the bases before
Chris Biocic reached on a fielder's choice, with Muniz safe at second on the throwing error in which Rivera scored an unearned run to cut the deficit to 10-8. With two outs,
Waldyvan Estrada singled through the left side, scoring P.J. Biocic and Muniz to tie the score at 10-10.
