ASU lets lead slip as N. Kentucky rallies for 8-6 win

For the second time in as many days, the Alabama State softball team had a lead that got away as Northern Kentucky came back for an 8-6 win Sunday to win two of three in the series at the Barbara Williams Softball Complex.

Though, it didn't come without a fight from ASU (6-19).

The Lady Hornets fell behind 3-0 from the onset and fought back to take a 5-3 lead as the team scratched a run in the first and then tacked on two more runs in both the second and third innings.

But, a four-run fifth inning highlighted by a two-run double by Norse designated player Dani Devlin proved the difference.

It gave Northern Kentucky (3-12) the lead back at 6-5 and it was one that they would not relinquish again.

Carly Evans got Alabama State on the board with a RBI single that scored Valerie Centeno in the first.

The Lady Hornets knotted the score at 3-3 in the bottom of the second inning when Chelsea Rivera reached on a fielding error that scored Yvette Ducoing.

Centeno doubled home Rivera on a sharply hit ball to left-center field.

ASU took a 5-3 lead in the third when Perry Hindi came through with a pinch hit, two-run single to right field.

The Lady Hornets got a run back in the sixth inning after Rivera earned a walk, advanced to second on a passed ball and later scored on a Centeno RBI groundout.

Melissa Christmann (3-6) took the loss, but pitched admirably throughout the contest.

The junior hurled 112 pitches to total 200 pitches on the weekend.

Christmann went six and two third innings and allowed five runs (four earned) on five hits and struck out four.

Centeno batted 2-for-3 with a double, a stolen base, a run and two RBI.

Sophomore third baseman Kendall Core was 2-for-3 with a walk.

ASU will next travel to Macon, Ga., to take on Mercer for a nonconference doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m. on Tuesday.
