Lady Hornets fall to Georgia State

MONTGOMERY, ALA. – The Lady Hornets fell into a two-goal deficit by halftime and dropped its regular season home opener 5-0 to visiting Georgia State of the Sun Belt Conference on Friday evening at the ASU Soccer Complex.

It was the first meeting in school history between Georgia State and Alabama State in soccer.

"We didn't show up for the energy to play," said ASU head women's soccer coach Jodie Smith.

"The locker room was a bit flat.  For whatever reason, we were not mentally prepared to play today.  Maybe it's because of the first week of classes and we were tired and there was an adjustment.  We have to find a way to get better."

Junior Suzanne Arafa scored twice including one on a long range shot from outside of 25 yards while Lauren Harriman, Callie O'Connor and Ashley Nagy each added a goal apiece for the Lady Panthers (1-0).

Larissa White led the Lady Hornets (0-1) with a team-high three shots, but ASU was outshot 19-6 for the match.

"We probably created the best two opportunities to score in the first 15 minutes of the match to score.  If we showed a bit more composure, and scored one of those, then maybe it's a different game and it changes our focus.  Tactically, we made a lot of errors."

Junior Brie Haynes kept a clean sheet for 82 minutes plus of action in net and combined with Anastasia Swift for the shutout.

Lady Hornets' freshman Gianna Guyot made seven saves in just over 69 minutes in net for ASU.

Alabama State will host another Sun Belt conference team in Troy on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
