MONTGOMERY, ALA.  – It wasn't the start that the Alabama State women's soccer team had hoped for and it snowballed from there as ASU lost 10-2 to visiting Georgia Southern in a nonconference match Friday night at the ASU Soccer Field.
The Eagles (3-3-1) scored four goals within a five-minute span early in the first half, won the majority of 50/50 balls and ran past the Lady Hornets with a heavy 19-7 shots on goal advantage.
Pacing Georgia Southern was Jennifer Wittick and Nora El-Shami, who each scored a hat trick in the match.Â
The Lady Hornets (0-5-1) were able to strike back with two second half goals.
Shyann Cordova and
Ally Murphy each scored their first of the season.
It was Cordova's first career goal. Â
Cordova rung up ASU's first tally of the match in the opening minute of the second half on a feed from
Shelbi Vienna-Hallam inside the box.Â
Murphy scored in the 78
th minute off an assist from
Aaliyah Lewis' corner kick whose pass sailed directly in front of the net.Â
"It was a poor display from the coaching staff all the way down to the players," said ASU head coach
Jodie Smith.
"Evidently, we, the coaching staff, did not get them ready to play today. That's on me and we're going to get it corrected. We're not doing this. It was a poor display in every facet of the game. I'm disappointed. We will get it corrected." Â
Next, ASU will play at Jacksonville State on Sunday at 1 p.m.
