GREENSBORO, NC  – The Alabama State women's volleyball team nearly completed a comeback after being down two sets to none before losing to Norfolk State in five sets (17-25, 18-25, 25-14 25-11,13-15) in their early match and then fell at UNC-Greensboro in straight sets (15-25, 14-25, 23-25) to conclude play in the Spartan-Aggie Invitational on Saturday.
ASU (3-7) ended up splitting their four-match road swing to North Carolina with a 2-2 record.Â
In the first game,
Rachel Smith extended her streak to four consecutive games with a double-double as the senior accounted for a team-high 14 kills (.355 hitting percentage) with 12 digs and two aces to lead the Lady Hornets.
Smith was was of two ASU players named to the Spartan/Aggie All-Tournament team.Â
Myla Marshall was the second player after extending her streak to eight straight matches with least three blocks in a match. She had a team-high eight kills in the late match on Saturday and had four kills and eight blocks in the early match on Saturday.  ASU lost the early match despite scoring eight more total points than the Spartans (1-7) and swung for a better team hitting percentage (ASU hit .211 while NSU hit .064).
With the fifth set tied at 12 all, the Spartans were able to win three of the final four points behind three kills by Hope Forsythe.Â
For ASU,
Lorena Rosario tied a season-high with 10 kills,
Kori Kutsch led the team in assists with 23 and
Scout Wonsang boasted a team-high 16 digs.Â
In the late game, UNC-Greensboro hit .325 as a team and were led by Ashley Muench, who had a game-high 17 kills.Â
The Lady Hornets' most consistent set was the third when the team hit .293 as a collective squad.Â
Smith and
Kimeko Bennett added six kills apiece,
Riley MacDonald led the team with 14 assists and Wonsang tallied 16 digs.
Next, Alabama State heads to Conway, AR to play three matches in the University of Central Arkansas Tournament starting Friday.Â
