CLARKSVILLE, TN  – Two Lady Hornets  soccer players were able to notch their first goals of the season, but Alabama State saw an otherwise rough day in a 10-2 defeat on the road in a nonconference match to Austin Peay on Sunday afternoon at Morgan Brothers Soccer Field.
The Lady Hornets (0-7-1) fell behind three goals before freshman
Emily Fleming scored her first career collegiate goal.
Fleming boxed out her defender and then scored with her left foot in the 35
th minute to cut the deficit to two.Â
But, Nicole Wojcik scored two first half goals to lead the Lady Governors (4-4).
Wojcik scored her first in the 26
th minute on a penalty kick and later added her second of the day in the 36
th minute moments after Fleming got ASU on the board.Â
Alabama State trailed 5-1 at the break and was outshot 13-5 in the opening 45 minutes of play.
In the 55
th minute, ASU junior
Kayla Edwards scored her first goal of the season off a short pass from senior
Kaedi Walther in the center of the box.
It was Edwards' ninth career goal at Alabama State for the Preseason All-SWAC Second Team selection.
"That was a positive that Emily [Fleming] and Kayla [Edwards] were able to get their first goals, but we had too many defensive lapses," said ASU head women's soccer coach
Jodie Smith.
"That's something we have to answer before our conference play begins. We start anew with conference play on Friday and hopefully we can begin on a high note."   Â
The Lady Hornets were unable to get any closer in the match as Austin Peay added four goals within a 14-minute span about midway through the second half.
ASU goalkeeper
Gianna Guyot made nine saves in just over 80 minutes of action.Â
Austin Peay held a 27-8 advantage in shots and 19-4 edge for shots on goals.Â
Next, Alabama State will return home and open conference play against Howard on Friday at 7 p.m.
