ASU looks to flip the script in Trojan Invitational

TROY, Ala.  – The Alabama State volleyball team will look to flip the script for their season and in their recent series history against the teams they are scheduled to play this weekend beginning Friday when the Lady Hornets open play Friday in the Trojan Invitational.

ASU will have their hands full in facing three nonconference teams that defeated them in their previous meeting.

The Lady Hornets (1-2) open against East Tennessee State (1-2) of the Southern Conference on Friday at 3 p.m.

ETSU and ASU last met nearly three years ago to the day when the Bucs nipped the Lady Hornets in five sets on Sept. 7, 2012.

The Bucs are led by senior middle blocker Khadijah Wiley, who has a team-high 29 kills and 16 blocks, and junior outside hitter Briana Allmon, who has 24 kills and 13 digs.

ETSU defeated LIU Brooklyn in their last match in four sets, but lost at Virginia Tech and to Washington State.

The Lady Hornets will continue play in the invitational with two matches scheduled for Saturday.

First up, ASU will take on Troy of the Sun Belt Conference at noon followed by a match with Cal-State Bakersfield at 5 p.m.

The Lady Hornets have lost to the Trojans (2-2) in three consecutive seasons.

Troy is led by a trio of hitters including senior Blair Winston (38 kills, 33 digs, 10 blocks), junior Symone Shaw (36 kills, nine blocks) and senior Darby Griff (31 kills, 21 blocks).

The Trojans are coming off a thrilling five-set win against UAB on Tuesday.

"I feel like we competed very well against Troy last year," said ASU volleyball head coach Penny Lucas-White.

"But, now I think that we are a year older and more mature so I expect a real good outing this weekend.  I've felt like we've had a great week of practice thus far.  The middles and setters are connecting a whole lot better and everybody understands their role.  I'm looking forward to the weekend."

ASU will finish up the invitational with a match against the Roadrunners (0-4) of the WAC.

In their last head-to-head matchup, Cal-State Bakersfield defeated ASU in two meetings (one in four sets and the other in three sets) during the 2012 season.

"These are very good, quality teams that we need to compete against really well," Lucas-White said.

"The good news is that we've got Amber [Bennett], Scout [Wonsang], Tiara [Kelley] and Jamie [Coleman] back this week so that's four players that are a vital part of our program."
