MONTGOMERY – Alabama State could not overcome a poor shooting night in a 59-55 loss to Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
Â
"Quite frankly we are not a very good team right now," Head Coach
Lewis Jackson said. "We had our chances to win this game and we didn't do the things we needed to down the stretch."
Â
ASU led 53-51 after two
Tony Armstrong free throws with 1:51 left in the game. From there the visitors outscored ASU 8-1 as ASU committed three turnovers and missed three free throws that would have helped their cause.
Â
"Our defense is real bad right now," Jackson said. "We get pushed around, we don't help and a team comes out with some aggression and we turn the ball over. When you are at home you have to finish the game. You have to be efficient in your offense and you have to play with a sense of urgency and desire to make things happen and right now we are not doing that."
Â
Tony Armstrong had a big game with a game-high 20 points on the night. He hit five of his 10 field goals and was 10 of 14 at the free throw line. He was the only Hornet to reach double digits.
Â
ASU (6-10/1-3) only shot 33 percent from the field and missed all 13 of their three point field goal attempts. The Hornets only turned the ball over six times in the first half, but had 10 in the second half, three of those in the final two minutes.
Â
The Hornets managed to get to the free throw line 37 times but only hit 25 for 68 percent.
Â
The Golden Lions (3-14/1-2) came into the game only shooting 31 percent from beyond the three point line, but managed to hit eight in the game.
Â
UAPB shot 48 percent from the field with Ghiavonni Robinson leading the way with 15 points. He was the only UAPB player to reach double digits in the game.
Â
UAPB carried a 33-30 lead into the locker room at halftime backed by their six three point field goals. They entered the game only shooting 31 percent on the season, but hit 46 percent in the opening 20 minutes. That buoyed them to a 56 percent shooting performance with Robinson scoring 11 points and Jackson scoring eight.
Â
ASU was cold from the field but picked it up later in the half and finished with 35 percent shooting. Most of that came from Armstrong who had 14 at half. The Hornets continued to go into the paint and were rewarded with 20 free throws, but only hit 12, but it was enough to keep them close.
Â
The Hornets will end the current three-game home stand Saturday, Jan. 16 when they host rival Alabama A&M at 5 p.m. The game will be shown live on the SWAC Digital Network.
